Driving Lesson FAQs — Huddersfield

Everything you need to know about learning to drive with Pass Next Driving School in Huddersfield.

Getting Started

Which areas do you cover for driving lessons?

We teach in Huddersfield and the surrounding areas, including Dewsbury, Mirfield, Brighouse, Halifax, Cleckheaton, Heckmondwike, Batley, Birstall and Liversedge. Add your pick-up point when you book and we'll confirm we can collect you from there.

How old do I need to be to start driving lessons?

You can start learning to drive in a car from the age of 17. However, you can apply for your provisional licence from age 15 years and 9 months so it's ready for your 17th birthday.

Do I need a provisional licence before my first lesson?

Yes — you'll need a valid UK provisional driving licence before you can have your first lesson on public roads. You can apply for one at GOV.UK.

What should I bring to my first driving lesson?

Bring your provisional driving licence (the photocard), and your glasses or contact lenses if you need them to drive. Wear comfortable, flat shoes that give you a good feel for the pedals, and eat or drink something beforehand so you can concentrate.

I'm a complete beginner — is that okay?

Absolutely. Most learners start with no experience at all. We'll begin with the basics and build up your skills and confidence at a pace that suits you.

I've had previous lessons with another school — can I still book?

Of course! We regularly take on learners who've had lessons elsewhere or who've had a break. We'll assess your current level in the first lesson and tailor a plan from there.

Prices & Payment

How much are driving lessons in Huddersfield with Pass Next?

Manual lessons are £35 per hour and automatic lessons are £38 per hour. Block bookings cost less per hour: a 10-hour manual block is £340 and a 20-hour manual block is £660. The full price list is on our Lessons & Prices page.

Do you offer discounts for block bookings?

Yes. Booking 10 or 20 hours up front costs less than paying hour by hour. Our lesson planner shows what you would save.

Can I pay online?

Manual lessons can be paid for online through a secure payment page when you book. For automatic lessons, send us an enquiry and we'll arrange payment with you.

Lessons & Booking

How do manual driving lessons work?

Each lesson is one-to-one in the instructor's car. You learn the controls, including the clutch and gears, then build up through moving off and stopping, junctions and roundabouts, positioning, manoeuvres, independent driving and hazard awareness. Your progress is tracked skill by skill so you can see what you've mastered and what's next.

How long is each driving lesson?

We offer 1-hour and 2-hour lessons. For beginners, 1.5 to 2 hours is often more effective as it allows more time to build on each skill within a single session.

How do I book a lesson?

Use the online booking form to choose your lesson type, preferred date, preferred time of day and pick-up point. You can also call 07999 807774 or message us on WhatsApp. We'll then get in touch to confirm your slot.

Can I choose my lesson times?

You can tell us your preferred date and time of day (morning, afternoon or evening) when you book, and we'll work around your schedule as much as possible. We teach Monday to Sunday.

How far in advance do I need to book?

We recommend booking at least a week in advance to secure your preferred slot. Block bookings can be scheduled several weeks ahead.

What if I need to cancel or rearrange?

We ask for at least 48 hours' notice for cancellations or rescheduling. Cancellations within 48 hours may incur a charge — please call us as soon as possible.

Manual vs Automatic

Should I learn in a manual or automatic?

A manual licence allows you to drive both manual and automatic cars. An automatic licence only permits you to drive automatics. If you're unsure, we recommend manual — but if you find gears frustrating, automatic is a great option.

Is it easier to pass in an automatic?

Many people find automatic lessons easier as there's no gear-changing to worry about, letting you focus on road awareness. However, both tests follow the same DVSA standard.

Can I switch between manual and automatic during my lessons?

You can, but your licence will reflect which test you take. Please let us know as early as possible if you'd like to switch.

The Driving Test

How does the practical driving test work?

The practical test usually lasts around 40 minutes. It starts with an eyesight check (reading a number plate from 20 metres) and one 'tell me' question. You then drive with the examiner, including about 20 minutes of independent driving, one reversing manoeuvre (parallel park, bay park, or pull up on the right and reverse) and one 'show me' question while driving. You must have passed your theory test first. Check GOV.UK for the latest details and to book.

How many mistakes can I make and still pass?

You pass the practical test with no more than 15 driving faults (minor mistakes) and no serious or dangerous faults. The examiner tells you the result at the end of the test.

How many lessons will I need before I'm ready to test?

The DVSA estimates learners need around 45 hours of professional tuition. In reality this varies — some learners are ready in fewer hours, others need more. We'll tell you honestly when we think you're test-ready.

Can you take me for my test?

Test-day arrangements depend on your booking, so please ask us when you book your lessons or when your test date is confirmed, and we'll confirm exactly what is possible.

What happens if I fail my test?

Don't worry — failing is more common than many people realise. We'll go through your result with you, identify areas to work on, and help you get ready for another test.

Where can I practise Show Me Tell Me questions?

Our Show Me Tell Me page lists the questions the examiner can ask, with the answers, so you can practise before your test.
